Copperfield Damper Repair: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
A Copperfield damper repair in Fort Worth typically runs between $185 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the linkage, or the full top-mount assembly. We keep common Copperfield-compatible damper parts on our trucks, and most replacements are completed in a single visit.

Most homeowners discover the problem on the first cold evening of fall. You open the damper, light a fire, and smoke drifts back into the living room instead of up the flue. Or you’re standing under the firebox feeling a cold draft in July, which means the damper isn’t sealing when closed. Danny Cortes has seen both of these calls hundreds of times across Fort Worth, from older homes off Camp Bowie to newer construction out near Eagle Mountain Lake. The good news: this is one of the most straightforward fireplace repairs we do, and the fix usually holds for years.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield has produced two main damper lines over the years: the original throat-mount cast iron dampers found in masonry fireplaces built through the 1990s and early 2000s, and the newer top-sealing dampers that mount at the flue crown. The parts are not interchangeable. A top-mount Copperfield damper uses a cable or threaded linkage that runs down the flue to a bracket in the firebox, while the older throat damper is a simple pivot-and-pawl mechanism. If you’re trying to identify yours, look for a small manufacturer label on the damper frame itself, or measure the flue opening. Throat dampers on older Fort Worth homes typically measure between 8 and 13 inches wide at the opening. Top-mount units need a flue cavity measurement, which we take during the service call.
When you’re choosing between OEM Copperfield parts and aftermarket equivalents, we’ll be honest with you about the difference. Copperfield OEM parts are well made, but on many models a quality aftermarket damper from a manufacturer like Gelco or Famco will fit correctly and meet the same safety standard at a lower price. Where the OEM part is the only thing that fits properly, we’ll tell you that too, and we’ll order it rather than forcing something that doesn’t seal. One gotcha we see often: the cast iron frame on old throat dampers warps over time. Swapping just the plate onto a warped frame means it’ll never close tight. In those cases, replacing the full frame, not just the plate, is the only fix that actually stops the draft.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Is Failing
- A cold draft from the fireplace when it’s not in use. The damper plate isn’t seating fully against the frame, usually due to rust pitting on the mating surfaces or a stretched linkage. This is the most common complaint we hear in January and February in Fort Worth.
- Smoke rolls back into the room when you start a fire. The damper isn’t fully open, or the plate has shifted on its pivot. Check the lever or chain first; if it moves freely but the smoke persists, the plate is likely warped or the throat is obstructed.
- The damper lever or chain is stuck, loose, or spins without resistance. On top-mount Copperfield units, this almost always means the cable has snapped or come detached from the damper plate itself.
- You can hear wind whistling through the chimney on blustery days. That’s air moving past a damper that isn’t sealing, and in North Texas wind this is a near-constant annoyance on the west side of town.
- Visible rust flakes or pitting on the damper plate during a visual check. Rust is how these parts fail. Once pitting starts, the plate will never seal the same way again, even with adjustment.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Worth, a standard Copperfield throat damper replacement runs between $185 and $320 most weeks. Top-mount damper replacements run $280 to $420 because the work happens on the flue crown and includes replacement of the cable or linkage system. The price range depends on the flue size, whether the frame needs to be replaced along with the plate, and how accessible the damper is in your particular fireplace.
Every job includes the full parts cost, the labor, and disposal of the old damper. Before any work starts, you’ll get a written price, so there’s no surprise at the end. The replacement damper is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty on the part, and our labor is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the damper doesn’t operate correctly within a year of the install, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a few checks yourself. With the damper in the open position, shine a flashlight up into the throat and look for obvious rust, debris, or a plate that’s visibly crooked and won’t seat. Try moving the lever or chain through its full range and listen for grinding. What we don’t recommend is removing the damper plate yourself. It’s heavy cast iron in most Copperfield units, and if it drops while you’re underneath it, it will do real damage to you or the firebox floor. The spring tension on some models can also catch fingers.

FAQs
Most Copperfield dampers last 15 to 25 years in the Fort Worth climate, but the full range we see is 10 to 30 years. The variable is moisture: Texas humidity plus occasional driving rain through an uncapped flue accelerates rust on cast iron components. If your damper is older than 20 years and starting to show pitting, replacement is more cost effective than repeated adjustments.
Sometimes. If the issue is a loose linkage, a bent lever, or debris blocking the seat, we can often repair it in place. If the plate is warped or rusted through, repair isn’t worth doing; the plate will fail again. We’ll always show you the condition of the part and let you decide. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll give you an honest assessment.
Most Copperfield damper replacements in Fort Worth take between 60 and 90 minutes once the part is in hand. If we’re replacing a frame along with the plate, or working on a top-mount unit that requires access to the flue crown, plan on up to two hours.
We stock common Copperfield-compatible throat damper sizes and top-mount kits on our trucks, along with parts from DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, and Famco when an alternative fits better. For an unusual flue size or a specific OEM part, we’ll order it and schedule your install as soon as it arrives, usually within a few days.
When you’re ready to sort out that draft or get the damper working before the next cold snap, call us at (682) 382-9934. A live person answers every call, and we’ll get you scheduled for a free estimate.
