Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
A Copperfield chimney cap installation in Fort Worth typically runs between $350 and $850 installed, depending on the cap size, flue dimensions, and whether the existing mounting hardware is still sound. We stock Copperfield-compatible caps and mounting kits on our trucks, so most installs are done in a single visit. Most homeowners discover they have a problem when they hear water dripping into the firebox after a hard rain, or when they spot rust staining on the chimney crown below the cap.

We’re an independent chimney service company in Fort Worth, not a Copperfield affiliate, but we install and service their caps regularly because they hold up well against Texas hail and sun when properly fitted. Danny Cortes has pulled enough bent, rusted, and bird-packed caps off Fort Worth chimneys to know exactly which Copperfield models fail and which ones last. The good news: a failed cap is almost always a fast fix, and the right replacement stops water damage before it reaches your damper or firebox.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes chimney caps in two main lines: the standard single-flue caps (sized to the outside dimensions of your flue tile) and the multi-flue caps that mount to the crown and cover two or more flues at once. Most Fort Worth homes with a single fireplace use the single-flue version, but we see plenty of older two-story homes in neighborhoods like Wedgwood and Ridglea that have two flues sharing a wide crown.
Here’s the part most owners don’t know: a Copperfield cap sized for a standard 8″x8″ clay flue tile won’t fit a 13″x13″ tile, and guessing the size wastes a trip up the ladder. The measurement that matters is the outside width and length of the flue tile itself, not the inside opening. If the old cap is still in place, we can read the size stamp on the underside or the base skirt. If it’s gone, we measure on site before quoting a dollar figure. Replacement caps should always be stainless steel or copper, not galvanized, because galvanized rusts through within three to five years in Texas where rain and high heat alternate all year. We also keep Copperfield-compatible mounting brackets in several depths, because the gap between flue tile and cap skirt determines whether the cap seats tight or wobbles loose in a North Texas windstorm.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The most common sign. Rain finds its way past a cap that’s rusted through at the seams or shifted off-level. Even a small gap lets a surprising amount of water in during a Fort Worth thunderstorm.
- Rust streaks running down the chimney crown. This usually means the cap’s base or mounting screws are rusting and bleeding onto the masonry. Left alone, the rust accelerates crown cracking because the metal expands and contracts at a different rate than the concrete.
- The cap sits crooked or moves when you tap it gently with a broom handle from below. Loose mounting straps or stripped masonry screws are the culprit. A crooked cap catches wind on one side and slowly works itself looser every season.
- Debris or bird nesting material visible under the cap mesh. Copperfield caps with 3/4″ mesh keep out most wildlife, but if the mesh has pulled away from the frame, starlings and sparrows will find their way in. Fort Worth has aggressive bird populations in spring, and we’ve cleaned nests out of flues in nearly every neighborhood we serve.
- A whistling or humming sound from the chimney on windy days. This often means the cap was the wrong size to begin with, or the mounting brackets have loosened enough to let the cap vibrate against the flue tile. Annoying, but also a warning that the cap is working itself loose.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most single-flue Copperfield chimney cap installations in Fort Worth, expect to pay between $350 and $550 fully installed. Multi-flue caps covering a wider crown run $550 to $850, and custom copper caps that require special ordering can exceed $900. The range comes down to three things: the flue tile dimensions, whether we need standard or extended mounting brackets, and whether the existing crown is in good enough shape to accept new masonry screws without patching.
Every installation includes removing the old cap, cleaning the flue tile rim, installing the new Copperfield-compatible cap with stainless hardware, and a photo report of what was done. We hand you a written price before any work begins, no on-the-spot negotiation, and every job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap shifts or the install isn’t right within a year, we come back and fix it. No fine print.

DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a Copperfield chimney cap means working on a roof, usually on a slope, often around a chimney chase that’s slick with rain or morning dew. That’s real height work, and a fall from a one-story roof can change a life. We don’t recommend homeowners do this themselves, even if the old cap looks easy to reach.
What you can safely do: look up from ground level with binoculars and check whether the cap is visibly tilted, rusted through, or missing mesh. If something looks off, call us at (682) 382-9934. We’ll come out, take proper measurements, show you what’s actually wrong, and give you a written price before any tools come off the truck. Most cap replacements in Fort Worth take under an hour once we’re on the roof.
FAQs
A properly installed stainless steel Copperfield cap lasts 15 to 20 years in the Fort Worth climate. Galvanized versions rust through much faster, often within 5 years, due to the combination of summer heat, spring hail, and periodic heavy rain. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your cap has years left or needs to be swapped before the next storm season.
Sometimes. If the mesh has pulled away from the frame but the base and mounting hardware are still solid, we can often resecure the mesh and extend the cap’s life by a few years. If the base is rusted through or the mounting straps are bent, replacement is the cheaper fix in the long run. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll give you a straight answer, with photos, before you decide.
Most single-flue cap installations in Fort Worth take 45 to 60 minutes from the time we step onto the roof. Multi-flue caps take a bit longer, usually 90 minutes to two hours, because we’re working across a wider crown and setting more mounting points. Call (682) 382-9934 for a free estimate and we’ll give you a realistic time window.
We keep the most common Copperfield-compatible cap sizes and mounting brackets stocked on our trucks, so many Fort Worth installs happen same-day after a quick measurement. For uncommon flue sizes or copper caps, we place a special order and typically install within a week. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll check what’s on the truck before we schedule your visit.
If your Copperfield chimney cap has seen better days, or if you’re not sure what you’re looking at from the ground, give us a call. We’ll walk you through what we’re seeing, measure twice, and hand you a written price before anything gets touched. A clean flue is just a family being careful, let’s make sure yours is.
