Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Olympia Chimney Crown Repair: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

If you have an Olympia Chimney fireplace or wood stove with a cracked, spalled, or missing crown, we stock the materials and know-how to repair or rebuild it properly, typically for $650 – $1,400 installed depending on crown size, damage extent, and access from the roof. Most Fort Worth homeowners discover crown damage after noticing water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, crumbling mortar bits on the roof or shingles, or efflorescence (white, chalky mineral streaks) running down the chimney’s exterior face. The crown is the concrete or mortar slab that caps the top of the chimney, and when it fails, water gets behind the brick and starts a slow but relentless cycle of freeze-thaw damage that Texas actually makes worse than most people realize.

We’re an independent chimney service provider, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, but we work with their products regularly and stock compatible crown repair materials on our trucks year-round. If you’ve got an Olympia unit and a deteriorating crown, this page is the full picture: which models it affects, what failure looks like, what a fair Fort Worth price is, and whether you can patch it yourself or should call us at (682) 382-9934.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

Olympia Chimney manufactures stainless steel chimney systems, liners, and prefabricated fireplace components rather than traditional masonry chimneys. The “crown” on an Olympia installation is typically the top cap or rain termination assembly that seals the top of the chase or flue pipe, not a poured concrete crown like you’d see on a brick chimney. This distinction matters because the failure mode and fix are different.

Olympia’s product lines include the Ventis, Galaxie, and Insulated Chimney Pipe (ICP) series, plus locking bands, flashings, and storm collars. The crown-equivalent parts are the Ventis chimney top cap, storm collar, and chase top pan. These are model-specific: a Ventis cap fits only Ventis-flare pipe, not Generics, and the diameter must match (6″, 7″, or 8″ for most class-A applications). The easiest way to identify what you need is to find the metal label on the pipe near the ceiling support box or attic penetration. If the label is illegible, measure the inner diameter of the flue pipe at the top and check the seam pattern: Olympia’s locking bands have a distinctive tab-and-notch profile that differs from DuraFlex or HeatShield equivalents. Get this measurement right before ordering, and we’ll confirm it for you when we come out.

On the OEM vs aftermarket question: for the actual chimney pipe sections and structural components, we strongly recommend genuine Olympia parts because the seam geometry and thermal expansion clearances are engineered as a system. Mixing another brand’s pipe into an Olympia run can cause gaps when the assembly heats and cools. For crowns, caps, and chase pans, quality aftermarket stainless options are available and often improve on the original’s weather sealing, but they must be correctly sized and sealed with a high-temp silicone rated for constant 500°F exposure at the flue outlet.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains or discoloration on the ceiling near the chimney chase. The top cap or chase pan seal has failed and rain is finding its way inside the chase enclosure. By the time you see a stain, water has been getting in for at least a few weeks.
  • Rust streaks running down the side of the chimney or chase. The galvanized chase pan or cap base is corroding. Fort Worth’s summer humidity plus the constant heating-cooling cycle accelerates this on exposed metal.
  • Crumbling mortar or concrete chips on the roof after storms. If you have a masonry crown over an Olympia liner, freeze-thaw spalling is the usual cause. Spring is the worst time of year for this in North Texas as trapped moisture expands overnight.
  • Musty or smoky smell in the firebox when the fireplace isn’t in use. Water intrusion has soaked into the refractory panels or insulation around the Olympia liner, and it’s wicking odor back into the house on humid days.
  • Visible gaps between the storm collar and the pipe or chase. The high-temp silicone bead has dried and cracked, or the storm collar slipped after a heavy windstorm. This is the cheapest fix if caught early, and the most expensive if ignored.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Fort Worth homes with an Olympia Chimney system, crown and chase-top repairs run as follows:

  • Storm collar reseal only: $175 – $300. We clean the contact surface, replace the silicone bead with proper high-temp sealant, and verify the collar is seated correctly.
  • Chase pan or top cap replacement: $550 – $900. Includes new stainless or galvanized pan, cap, and collar as matched to your Olympia pipe diameter.
  • Masonry crown rebuild (for brick chimneys with Olympia liners): $850 – $1,400. Includes removal of the failed crown, form-and-pour new crown with proper overhang and drip edge, and waterproofing the top six feet of brick below it.

The range depends mostly on roof pitch and access, whether we can reuse the existing storm collar, and the condition of the pipe underneath once we inspect it. Every quote is a written flat price delivered before any work begins, and the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if it’s not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things yourself: from the ground with binoculars, look for missing or shifted storm collars, cracked caulk beads, or rusted chase pan corners. Take photos and compare them over a few months. That’s genuinely useful information for us when we arrive.

What we don’t recommend is getting on a roof to reseal or patch these parts yourself. The crown area on an Olympia chimney is usually at the highest point of the roof, and a fall from that height is life-altering. Beyond the ladder risk, a bad silicone job on a storm collar just traps moisture underneath and accelerates the rust. If you’re not comfortable on a steep roof with both hands free for tools, this is a job for a trained professional. We carry the right sealants, the right stainless parts on the truck, and we do this without leaving footprints on your ceiling. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll come take a look, no charge for the inspection.
