Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
A Gelco damper repair in Fort Worth typically runs $240 – $480 installed, depending on which Gelco series your fireplace uses and whether we’re rebuilding the existing frame or swapping in a new assembly. We keep the most common Gelco damper parts on the truck, so most repairs happen in a single visit. The part that fails most often is the cast-iron damper plate itself, or the hinge pin that lets it swing.

You usually find out the damper’s failed one of two ways. Either you reach up to open it before lighting a fire and the handle feels loose, spins freely, or won’t budge. Or you notice a draft coming down the chimney when the fireplace isn’t in use, and your heating bill inches up because warm air is escaping straight up the flue. Both point to the same thing: the damper isn’t sealing the way it should.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes fireplace dampers in a few distinct series, and the model matters when we’re matching parts. The two we see most often in Fort Worth homes are the Gelco 4-sided steel frame dampers and the older cast-iron Gelco units found in fireplaces built from the 1970s through the early 2000s. The cast-iron versions are heavier, simpler, and usually repairable with a new hinge pin assembly. The newer steel-frame models often need the entire damper body replaced when the frame warps.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: Gelco dampers aren’t one-size-fits-all. The damper plate is sized to the throat of your fireplace, typically ranging from 24 to 42 inches wide in half-inch increments. The size is usually stamped on the plate itself, but after years of heat exposure, that stamp can be unreadable. When that happens, we measure the firebox throat opening directly and match the plate dimensions. An aftermarket part can work fine here if it’s built to the same measurements, but OEM Gelco components are what we prefer for hinge fit and seal quality. Kindling Chimney Fort Worth is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Gelco, but we’ve installed and repaired enough of their dampers to know which parts hold up.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins without resistance. That means the hinge pin has snapped or the linkage to the damper plate has disconnected. The damper is now stuck in whatever position it was in when the pin let go.
- You feel a cold draft from the fireplace when it’s closed. A warped damper plate or a deteriorating frame seal leaves a gap, and that gap feeds outdoor air into the living room all winter.
- The damper won’t close all the way, even with firm pressure on the handle. Creosote buildup can seize the hinge, or the plate itself has warped from repeated heat cycles. Forcing it often makes the warp worse.
- Visible rust flakes or pitting on the damper plate. Moisture in the flue, common with Fort Worth’s humid springs and fall rains, accelerates rust on older cast-iron Gelco plates. Eventually the metal thins and cracks at the hinge point.
- Smoke backs up into the room when you light a fire. A damper that won’t stay open, or that’s partially collapsed, chokes the flue opening. That’s a burn-quality problem and a carbon monoxide risk in one.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Fort Worth homes, a new Gelco damper plate with hinge pin installation usually falls between $240 and $380. Full damper frame replacement, when the surrounding metal has warped or rusted through, lands in the $380 to $480 range. The difference comes down to whether we’re repairing the existing frame or tearing it out and anchoring a new assembly into the firebox throat.
Every quote we give includes the part, the labor, the hardware, and a written walkthrough of what we found before you commit to anything. No surprise charges after the fact. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if the damper doesn’t operate smoothly or the seal doesn’t hold, we come back and make it right. You’ll see the price on paper before the first tool comes out, and the technician signs off only after showing you the damper opening and closing cleanly.

DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. There are a couple of things you can check yourself: confirm the damper handle is actually attached, and look for obvious rust or a plate that’s hanging at an angle. Those observations help you describe the problem accurately when you call. Beyond that, we don’t recommend a DIY damper repair. The damper sits inside the firebox throat, which means working on it requires reaching up into a confined space with limited visibility and sharp metal edges. If the handle has come detached from the plate, there’s spring tension or linkage hardware involved that can snap back. A damper plate that drops while your hand is in the firebox will do real damage.

FAQs
A well-maintained Gelco cast-iron damper can last 20 to 30 years, but the hinge pin often fails sooner, especially in homes where the fireplace gets used every winter. Fort Worth’s humidity cycles accelerate rust on the plate edges, so dams that would last decades in a dry climate sometimes need attention at the 15-year mark here.
Yes, often. If the plate is intact and the frame is sound, a new hinge pin and linkage usually restores full function for under $300. Replacement only makes sense when the plate has warped, cracked, or the frame has rusted past the point where a new pin will hold.
Most Gelco damper repairs take 45 to 90 minutes from setup to clean-up. If we’re replacing the full frame assembly, plan on two hours. We bring the common parts on the truck, so we usually finish the job in one visit.
We stock the most common Gelco damper plates, hinge pins, and frame hardware on the truck, including aftermarket equivalents for discontinued sizes. We carry parts for other major brands too, including DuraFlex and HeatShield. Don’t order a part yourself, the sizing has to match the throat of your firebox exactly and we’d rather verify that in person.
If your Gelco damper is acting up, call (682) 382-9934 for a free estimate. A live person answers, day or night, and we’ll help you figure out what’s going on before we ever step foot in your home.
