Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
Kindling Chimney Fort Worth stocks and installs Gelco-compatible chimney caps, with most complete replacements in Fort Worth running between $385 and $720 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. We keep the most common Gelco cap sizes on our trucks, so a single visit usually handles measure, match, and install. Most owners discover their cap has failed the hard way: rain streaks on the fireplace wall, a rust stain running down the crown, or birds scratching inside the flue at 6 a.m.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco builds chimney caps in two lines that matter for Fort Worth homes: their standard single-flue caps (the GC series, sized by flue tile outside dimensions) and their multi-flue or full-coverage caps for wider masonry crowns. The most common fit we install is the single-flue cap for an 8×8 or 8×12 clay tile liner, but Fort Worth’s older stock runs a lot of 13×13 flues too, especially in Fairmount and Ryan Place, and those need a cap ordered before we can finish the job. Look at the cap’s underside: Gelco stamps the model number and flue dimensions there before the screen rusts out. If the stamp is gone, measure the outside length and width of the clay tile itself, not the cap. That measurement is what determines the right Gelco size.
What fails first on a Gelco cap is almost always the screen mesh, not the lid. The mesh corrodes at the corners where it meets the frame, opening a gap big enough for a starling but small enough to miss from the ground. We install genuine Gelco caps when we can, and quality aftermarket equivalents when the original series is discontinued. Kindling Chimney Fort Worth is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, which means we recommend what actually fits your flue, not what a brand catalog wants to sell.
Texas weather shortens cap life more than most owners expect. Between May hailstorms, July heat that bakes the powder coat, and the freeze-thaw swings we get in a bad January, a Gelco cap in Fort Worth that’s been up over 8 years has usually earned its replacement. We see stainless steel caps on shaded north-facing chimneys hold up nicely for a decade, while galvanized versions on full-sun exposures can start showing rust bloom in 5 to 6 years.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the fireplace wall or ceiling near the flue. The cap’s lid has pulled loose from its mounting brackets, and rain is tracking down the outside of the flue tile into the chase or masonry. By the time the stain shows inside, the leak has been active for a while.
- Rust streaks running down the chimney crown or brick face. The cap’s galvanized finish has thinned and the base ring is bleeding rust into the masonry. This doesn’t usually threaten the flue’s structure right away, but it means the cap is on borrowed time.
- Bird noise, nesting material, or animal activity inside the flue. The side screen has a tear or a pulled corner. Starlings and squirrels both get through shockingly small gaps, and once a nest starts, the flue’s draft drops fast.
- Debris falling into the firebox between uses. Creosote flakes, small twigs, even acorns landing on the grate or andirons without a fire lit. That’s a gap in the cap’s mesh allowing whatever’s on the roof to drop straight down the flue.
- The cap is visibly tilted or loose when it should sit level. Wind, hail, or a hard freeze has broken a mounting leg or the fasteners have backed out. A loose cap rattles in high wind and can eventually lift off entirely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Gelco chimney cap installations in Fort Worth fall between $385 and $720 installed. On the low end, that’s a standard single-flue Gelco cap for a common 8×8 or 8×12 flue with straightforward roof access. The mid-range covers larger 13×13 flues, multi-flue coverage, or stainless steel upgrades. The high end typically means steep roof pitch, a difficult access point, or a brick chase that needs anchor work before the cap can sit right.
What you’re paying for is three things: the cap itself, the mounting fasteners and sealant rated for chimney heat, and the install labor, which usually runs 45 to 90 minutes. Before anything goes on your roof, you get a written price with the cap and labor separated, so there’s no mystery in the math. If we find the original cap mount damaged during removal, we’ll show you before we change anything. The install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap isn’t seated right or leaks within the first year, we make it right without a second invoice.

DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do from the ground is spot-check: look for rust, tilt, gaps in the mesh, or missing fasteners with a pair of binoculars. That’s what an inspection is for. What goes wrong with DIY Gelco cap replacement is almost always access. Fort Worth roofs run steep, especially on two-story colonials in Arlington Heights, and the cap is at the highest, most awkward point of the roofline. Ladder work, shifting slate or tile, and carrying a metal cap up a ladder all combine badly. We’ve also seen more than one DIY install that used the wrong sealant, which cured rigid, cracked in the first freeze, and started leaking inside six months. If you’re on a single-story bungalow with a walkable pitch and you’re comfortable on a ladder, it’s a straightforward swap. If any of that sounds like more than you want to handle on a Saturday, call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll handle it cleanly, without leaving a mess on your roof or your yard.
FAQs
A Gelco stainless steel cap in Fort Worth typically lasts 10 to 12 years, while the galvanized models in full Texas sun usually need replacement at the 5 to 7 year mark. Hail, freeze-thaw cycles, and direct southern exposure shorten the window. If you want an exact lifespan estimate for your cap, call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll inspect it before you spend a dollar.
A small tear in the mesh or a single bent lid corner can sometimes be patched, but the repair rarely outlasts the labor cost. On a Fort Worth roof, the time spent securing a patch costs nearly what a new cap costs, and the patch leaves you with the same aging metal underneath. The exception is a loose mounting bracket, which is a five-minute fix if the cap itself is sound. We’ll tell you plainly which path your cap needs, with no pressure either way.
A standard single-flue Gelco cap install on a Fort Worth home takes 45 to 90 minutes, including removing the old cap, cleaning the mounting surface, and sealing the new one in place. If we have to order an unusual flue size or a specialty multi-flue cap, the install waits on shipping, usually 3 to 5 business days. Most of our single-flue jobs are done in one visit.
We stock the most common Gelco single-flue cap sizes on our trucks: 8×8, 8×12, and 13×13 outside tile dimensions, plus the mounting kits and sealant rated for flue heat. Larger multi-flue Gelco caps and stainless variants get ordered before we come out. When you call to book, we’ll ask for your flue tile’s outside measurements so we can bring the right cap on the first trip. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll walk you through the measuring in two minutes.
Need a Gelco cap matched, priced, and installed at your Fort Worth home? Call (682) 382-9934 for a free estimate. We’ll get the cap right the first time and leave your roof and fireplace exactly as we found them.
