Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
If your HeatShield chimney cap has rusted through, pulled loose in a Texas storm, or started letting rain into the flue, we stock the replacement parts and install them for most Fort Worth homes at $285 to $475 all-in, depending on flue size and roof access. We carry HeatShield caps ourselves, and we keep common sizes on the truck, so many Fort Worth homeowners get the swap done in a single visit. The way most people discover the cap has failed is a wet smell from the fireplace after heavy rain, or shingle-colored rust streaks running down the chimney chase.

We’re Kindling Chimney Fort Worth, led by Danny Cortes. We’re an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with HeatShield directly, but we install their caps regularly because the metal holds up well in North Texas weather when it’s fitted right.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield caps come in two main fits. The first is a masonry cap that bolts to the crown of a brick chimney, sized by the outside diameter of the flue liner. The second is a multi-flue cap that spans across two or three flues, common on older Fort Worth homes with separate furnace and fireplace flues. Before ordering anything, check the inside edge of the cap’s collar. HeatShield stamps the model number there on most units made after 2012, and that number tells us the exact flue diameter it was built for.
The compatibility gotcha we see most in Fort Worth: a HeatShield cap sold as a “13×13” means it covers a flue with a 13-inch outside measurement. Many homeowners measure the inside opening instead, which runs about two inches smaller, and end up with a cap that won’t seat. We measure both dimensions on site before any part is ordered. When a HeatShield cap has failed, we generally recommend replacing it with another HeatShield cap rather than a generic aftermarket unit. The bolt patterns and screen mesh align correctly, and the stainless steel grade HeatShield uses holds up better to the hail we get in Tarrant County than the thinner mesh on some cheaper equivalents.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s lid has rusted through or the screen mesh has pulled away from the collar, letting rain fall straight down the flue. You’ll see a small puddle or a dark stain on the fireplace floor.
- Rust streaks on the chimney crown. The cap’s base is wicking water under itself, and that water is carrying rust down across the masonry. This means the seal between cap and crown has failed, not just the cap itself.
- The cap sits crooked or rattles. HeatShield caps are bolted down, so a tilted cap usually means the anchors have worked loose in the concrete crown. Left alone, wind will keep working it until it lifts off completely.
- Birds or bees getting inside. The screen mesh around the cap’s sides has torn or corroded. In Fort Worth we pull a lot of mud dauber nests out of flues where the mesh gave way.
- A cap that’s just gone. We’ve seen more than one HeatShield cap end up in a neighbor’s yard after a spring storm. The lid makes a lot of noise on its way down, but if you weren’t home, the first sign is daylight where the cap used to be.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A HeatShield chimney cap installation in Fort Worth typically runs $285 to $475 installed. The cap itself is usually $170 to $290 depending on flue size and whether it’s a single-flue or multi-flue unit. Labor runs about an hour for a standard one-story roof with safe ladder access, and more if the chimney is steep or the chase requires a taller ladder setup.
Every quote includes the cap, the sealant, new anchor bolts, and full clean-up. Our written price comes before any work starts, and it doesn’t change unless we find something structural once we’re up there, in which case we stop and show you before proceeding. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap doesn’t stay put or the seal fails within a year, we come back and make it right without a second charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check from the ground whether your cap looks crooked, missing, or rusted through, using binoculars if you have them. What we don’t recommend is climbing a Fort Worth roof to replace the cap yourself. A chimney cap install means working at height with a drill, anchoring bolts into a concrete crown, and sometimes stepping onto a steep pitch. Danny Cortes grew up working with his hands and still keeps a woodworking bench in his garage, but he’ll be the first to tell you a roof is not the place to learn how your ladder behaves.
If the cap is loose but intact, a handyman can sometimes re-anchor it. The problem is that once a HeatShield cap has come loose in a Texas windstorm, the bolt holes are usually wallowed out, and the right fix is a new cap. Call us at (682) 382-9934 and we’ll come take a look without any obligation to do the work the same day.
FAQs
A properly installed HeatShield cap typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Fort Worth weather. The hail, high UV, and summer heat of North Texas wear down the screen mesh faster than the lid, and once the mesh goes, critters and rain follow. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your cap still has years left in it.
Small rust spots on the lid can sometimes be touched up with high-temp paint, but a torn mesh or corroded collar means the cap has done its job and it’s time for a new one. We don’t patch caps that are failing structurally because the patch rarely survives the next storm. Call (682) 382-9934 for a straight answer on yours.
Most single-flue HeatShield cap installations take about an hour once our technician is set up. Multi-flue caps run a little longer. We bring the cap up with us, and the only access we need is a ladder to the roof.
We keep common single-flue HeatShield cap sizes on the truck, and we can order the correct multi-flue or oversized cap within a few days for the less common Fort Worth chimneys. We’ll always confirm the exact model your chimney needs before ordering. Call (682) 382-9934 with the model number from your old cap if you have it, and we’ll tell you what’s in stock.
