Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
If your DuraFlex damper has stopped sealing, we can match the replacement part, install it, and have your fireplace working again for a flat price that’s written down before we touch anything. Most DuraFlex damper repairs in Fort Worth run between $220 and $480 installed, depending on your chimney’s exact setup and whether the damper frame itself needs re-seating. We stock DuraFlex-compatible damper plates, cable assemblies, and mounting hardware on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit.

Most Fort Worth homeowners notice the problem the same way: a draft that won’t quit, smoke backing into the living room on start-up, or a cable handle that spins without resistance. You pull the lever down, nothing engages, and suddenly the fireplace doesn’t feel right. Danny Cortes has walked hundreds of Fort Worth chimneys over the better part of two decades, and he’ll tell you: a damper that stops seating is the most common reason a fireplace stops behaving like one.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes damper assemblies for a few different chimney configurations, and the replacement part has to match your existing collar size. The damper plate diameter, the cable length, and the frame type all depend on whether you’ve got a masonry fireplace with a rectangular throat, a round flue tile, or a DuraFlex liner already in place. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, look for a small metal tag on the damper frame or inside the firebox. That tag usually lists the series number, and a photo of it sent to us before the visit helps us bring the right part on the first trip.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: DuraFlex dampers made before 2015 used a different cable ferrule size than current production. If your damper plate is fine but the cable snapped, we can often replace just the cable assembly without swapping the whole unit, but the ferrule has to match. We carry both sizes on the truck for that reason. Aftermarket replacements for DuraFlex damper plates are available, and we’ll be straight with you: some are perfectly fine, others use thinner gauge steel that warps within two or three seasons. We install DuraFlex-branded parts whenever your model is still in production, because that’s what the chimney was engineered around.
Kindling Chimney Fort Worth is an independent service provider, not a DuraFlex company. That means we can tell you honestly when a repair will hold up and when a replacement is the smarter money, without worrying about a brand rep.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- The cable handle moves but the damper doesn’t seal. This usually means the cable has stretched or slipped at the set screw. In Fort Worth’s dry summers, cable housings also collect dust that works its way into the slide, making the action gritty and loose at the same time.
- Cold air spills into the room even with the damper closed. A warped damper plate won’t sit flat against the frame, leaving a gap you can feel on windy days. We see this a lot after a season of hot fires, where the plate expands and contracts repeatedly against the throat.
- Smoke rolls into the room when you light a fire. A damper that won’t stay fully open can restrict the flue, and a damper that closes partway mid-burn pushes smoke back into the house. This one is worth calling about quickly, because the smoke travels through the living space.
- Rust flakes fall into the firebox when you operate the lever. Moisture from Fort Worth’s humid spring months gets trapped against a closed damper plate, especially in older chimneys without a rain cap. Once the plate starts rusting through, it needs replacement rather than adjustment.
- You can’t find the right replacement handle or cable locally. Big-box stores carry generic damper hardware that doesn’t match DuraFlex mounting points. If a previous owner swapped in a universal part, the damper never operated right, and the fix starts with matching the correct DuraFlex component.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Worth, a DuraFlex damper plate swap with cable assembly typically lands between $220 and $340. If the frame itself needs re-mortaring or re-seating, the job runs $340 to $480 because we pull the old frame, clean the throat, and set the new assembly with proper refractory material rather than just caulking the edges. We give you a written number before any work begins, so there’s no surprise at the end.
The price includes the part, labor, disposal of the old damper, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right. You’ll also get the Cedarwell Care Promise on the visit itself: shoe covers and drop cloths down before we start, nothing moved without asking, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew walks out. If your dampers need a full chimney inspection while we’re there, we’ll tell you what the camera showed us and put a quote in your hand, but nothing gets recommended that we can’t show you on screen.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely check a few things yourself. Open and close the damper a few times and listen for the plate seating against the frame. Look for visible rust, a frayed cable, or a set screw that’s worked loose. If the plate is just off-track and the cable is intact, you might get it back in place with a flashlight and patience.
Where DIY goes wrong is when people try to remove a damper plate blind. The plate is heavy cast steel, it sits directly above the firebox opening, and if it slips while you’re working under it, it can do real damage to hands and faces. The cable is under tension too, and a snapped ferrule can whip. We’ve also seen homeowners accidentally chip the throat brick, which turns a $250 repair into a $900 masonry job. The frame mortar has to match the existing firebox rating, and the plate has to be seated level or you’ll have the same draft again next month. That’s work for a trained technician with the right gloves and the right harness. Call (682) 382-9934 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
FAQs
A DuraFlex damper plate typically lasts 10 to 15 years in this climate, with the cable assembly often failing first at around 5 to 7 years. Fort Worth’s freeze-thaw cycles and humid spring months are what shorten that lifespan, because moisture trapped against a closed plate accelerates rust. If your damper is over a decade old and showing flaking metal or a loose cable, replacing it now costs less than waiting for the plate to fail on the first cold night of the season. Call (682) 382-9934 for an exact quote.
Yes, if the plate is intact and the problem is the cable, the handle, or the set screw, we can usually repair the assembly in one visit for under $200. If the plate is warped, rusted through, or no longer seats flat against the frame, repair becomes a short-term patch job, and we’ll tell you that plainly. The decision comes down to what the camera and a close inspection show, and we don’t recommend repairs that won’t hold.
Most damper plate and cable replacements are done in 60 to 90 minutes. If the frame itself needs to be pulled and re-seated with new refractory material, plan on a two to three hour visit. We’ll give you a time window when you book and stick to it.
We stock DuraFlex-compatible damper plates, cable assemblies, ferrules, and mounting brackets on our trucks, covering both pre-2015 and current production cable sizes. If your model needs a less common plate diameter, we’ll order it and schedule the install once it arrives, usually within a few business days. We also stock parts from HeatShield and Gelco for liner and component repairs, so most chimney work is a one-trip job for us.
